The Handover That Transfers Tasks but Not Judgment
Departing professionals typically document what they did and how they did it. They rarely document why certain choices were made over others, or under what conditions those choices would no longer apply. The successor inherits a procedure and lacks the discretion to know when the procedure is wrong.
The deficiency appears during exceptions. A situation falls outside the documented range, and the successor must improvise without knowing which constraints were essential and which were incidental. Improvisation without understanding produces confident errors.
Transferring judgment requires documenting the boundaries of applicability. For those building capability within their professional development strategies, boundary documentation is as valuable as procedural documentation. Our transition framework provides boundary approaches.
