The Person Who Holds the Context
In most teams one person understands why the current arrangement exists—which constraint shaped it, which past failure it prevents, which stakeholder requirement it satisfies. That understanding is rarely written down, and it rarely survives the person's departure.
The departure is when the cost appears. A newcomer proposes a sensible simplification, and no one can say whether the simplification will break something. The proposal is either blocked without explanation or approved without examination, and both outcomes are wrong.
Recording rationale is dull work with a delayed payoff. For those building durable teams, rationale capture is a quiet component of professional development strategies that survive turnover. Our documentation framework prioritizes what to record.
